]]>The Elderberry Plant (Elder) has a rich and ubiquitous history. The Elder is mentioned in ancient medicinal texts, heirloom cookbooks, folklore, Shakespearian stories and even J.K. Rowling’s uber popular Harry Potter series.

What exactly is this mysterious magical Elderberry Plant? Its scientific name is Sambucus, a genus of flowering plants within the Adoxaceae family. The various species of Sambucus are commonly called elder or elderberry. Both the flowers and elderberries can be used to make wine or black elderberry syrup. Elderflower wine was said to be drunk at the Beltane celebrations and at Samhain which was consumed to promote hallucinations at the end of each harvest season. Folklore from Denmark, Germany and England once believed the Elderberry Plant was sacredly holding a vengeful, living spirit named Danish Hyldemoer (Elder-Mother). This elder guarding being became best known from a fairy tale by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. The Elder-Mother is presented as a benign old woman who appears to a sick boy and shows him visions of foreign lands and his future life. But, was that only a dream?
All parts of the Elderberry Plant are considered prized and one must ask permission to take wood from the tree, otherwise a swift punishment will be released by the Elder-Mother. Don’t fret, the tree could be safely cut while chanting this rhyme:

In European history one of the earliest mentions is that of elderberry juice to increase resistance from illness and is associated with magic, written by German scholar, Conrad Von Megenberg (1309- 1374). Another reference is Shakespeare whom refers to the elderberry as a 'symbol of grief' in Cymbeline(1) and during medieval times, hedge cutters would avoid attacking the rampant growth of the Elderberry Plant. There is one whom the Elderberry does not threat...The Wizard. In the Harry Potter series, the Elder Wand played a pivotal role and the final book was nearly named ‘Harry Potter and the Elder Wand’ before author J.K. Rowling decided on ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.’
The Elder Wand (or Wand of Destiny), a mysterious instrument, is said to be the most powerful wand that has ever existed and has enticed many wizards such as Harry Potter. The Elder Wand is able to perform feats of magic that would normally be impossible even for the most skilled wizards. ]]>What is the mind-body connection? Does mental health really play a role in our physical well-being? You may be surprised just how closely connected our minds and bodies really are. In honor of National Yoga Month in September, we’re taking a look at how our mental health affects how we feel overall.
In our modern world, we have performed miraculous feats with the help of Western medicine, but mental health has largely been left out of that equation.
One important reason for this was the classic belief that the body and mind were separate entities. But research conducted over the last decade has shown that mental and physical health are much more closely connected than we thought. This new research may open up new ways of looking at our health, such as incorporating mindfulness practices like yoga and meditation, for a well-rounded, whole person approach.
Scientists are exploring how our mental and physical health are connected and how these systems interact with each other to affect our overall health.
One study, published in 2019 in the journal Health Psychology, analyzed the effects of depression and anxiety on physical health and found that depression and anxiety were just as bad for physical health as smoking cigarettes and obesity.
The study included over 15,000 retirees who were interviewed about their symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as their weight, history of smoking, and any diagnosed medical conditions.
The researchers found that the people living with high levels of anxiety and depression were 65% more likely to develop a heart condition, 64% more likely to have a stroke, 50% more likely to develop high blood pressure, and 87% more likely to have arthritis than people who did not have anxiety or depression.
These are similarly increased odds compared to those who smoke or are obese, according to the researchers; and for arthritis, it appeared anxiety and depression put people at an even higher risk than either smoking or obesity.
While this and other studies seem to demonstrate that the mind-body connection is real, it’s still unclear exactly how the mind and body interact and affect overall health. The mind and body are extremely complicated and we are still learning a lot about how it all works.
The mind and body affect each other, and they, in turn, are affected by our outside environment, our past experiences, and our present situations. A group of researchers aimed to put this into context and published their findings in 2017 in Social Science and Medicine.
Our mental and physical health, they found, are determined by our social interactions; our lifestyle choices, including how physically active we are, what we eat, and whether we smoke or drink alcohol; our socio-economic status, like our income, our job conditions, and retirement prospects; and biological factors, like stress and cognitive abilities.
These direct and indirect pathways affect us physically and mentally, and are intertwined in a complicated system. For example, study authors found that past social interactions played a significant role in a person’s overall mental and physical health, and people with past good mental health were less likely to smoke cigarettes.
This means our choices can affect our health and our health can affect our choices. Not to mention how situations outside of our control, both environmentally and biologically, affect us too.
This complicated web continues to be explored by scientists, and is reshaping how we think about our health. No longer is it enough to consider only physical conditions when dealing with health problems. We must also consider how our emotional health is playing a role too.
What does this all mean for our everyday health and wellness? To honor the mind-body connection, we should be prioritizing our mental and emotional health the way we prioritize our physical health.

What are whole foods? What’s the difference between whole foods and processed foods? What is a whole foods diet and do I need to eat one in order to be healthy?
Clean eating has become the new mantra in the health and wellness world as diets like Whole30 and Paleo become ever popular. Even Zac Efron is jumping on the food bandwagon with his new Netflix show “Down to Earth,” which tries to offer viewers insight into sustainability and healthy food from around the globe.
While Whole30 and Paleo are not without their critics, health experts do generally agree on the benefits of eating more whole foods and staying away from processed foods as much as possible.
But what is processed food? And why should we avoid them? Grace Pascale, a Registered Dietitian based in San Diego (follow her on Instagram: @babybychickpeas), says eating foods as close to their natural state as possible is one of the best things we can do for our health and longevity.
What Are Whole Foods, Anyway?
What are whole foods? It depends who you ask, says Grace. There is even debate among dieticians and nutritionists about what constitutes a whole food. Some consider animal foods, such as meat and dairy, to be whole foods, while others do not. Grace says if you can stick in the ground and it grows, then it’s a whole food. Fruits and vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds and other plant food in their natural form are what she considers whole foods.
“Colloquially, we think of processed foods as any food made in a factory. They’ve had all of their beneficial components stripped out and problematic components like sugar and salt put in,” explains Grace. But there are varying degrees of process.
She says, “Processed foods are really anything that's been processed in any way. Technically steamed broccoli is a processed food. Brown rice is processed. There are different degrees of processing. The most helpful definition for people is to think of it this way, if you stick the food in the ground, does it grow? Is it life-giving? Or have the beneficial components been stripped away?”
It’s the added components (salt, sugar, and fat) and the stripping of the beneficial ones (vitamins, minerals, and fiber) that contribute to modern-day diseases because they elicit an inflammatory response in the body. In fact, most of the diseases and conditions we suffer from, both physically and mentally, can be reduced by eating a whole foods, plant based diet because that kind of diet reduces inflammation.
“Most of the diseases we suffer from stem from inflammation,” explains Grace. “Whole foods have antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that reduce inflammation.” We can reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, heart disease, diabetes and other crippling diseases by reducing inflammation in our bodies, she says.
How Whole Foods Contribute to Better Health
How do whole foods and minimally processed foods reduce inflammation and contribute to better health? It’s all about what they contain. Those antioxidants, vitamins and minerals help fight inflammation by reducing blood sugar spikes in the body, even when you eat processed foods with whole foods.
According to research conducted by Dr. Michael Gregor, a physician, New York Times bestselling author, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, whole foods such as berries and avocados curbed the spike in blood sugar when they were eaten along with processed foods like white bread and hamburgers compared to eating those processed foods alone.
Your body responds to intense spikes in blood sugar by pumping out insulin, making the pancreas work overtime. This response increases inflammation and contributes to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other health problems.
“Eating a whole foods, plant-based diet is the healthiest diet in terms of disease prevention. It’s the gold standard for longevity and mental wellness,” says Grace. But it's also not necessarily easy to eat such a diet, especially in our fast-paced world where fast food seems to power our most busy days.
Grace’s tip for beginners looking to cut out some processed foods from their diet is: make it at home. If you’re going to have a treat, make it at home. Instead of grabbing a cookie out of the bag, make a batch at home. Even salty snacks like chips can be made at home. It’s more of an effort, of course, but that’s the point.
These snacks are important for quality of life—because who doesn’t want a cookie every once in a while? But by making them at home, not only will they contain less ingredients than their super-processed grocery store version, it won’t be as easy to grab one for breakfast every morning.

For some it’s a quick allergy shot or antihistamine solution, unfortunately for many others, allergies may be experienced year-round and are quite the disturbance in everyday tasks.
So, what exactly is an allergy and are there natural solutions to relieving this nettlesome issue? An allergy is an immune system response to a foreign substance that's not typically harmful to your body. ]]>What is elderberry? This little berry carries a big weight on its shoulders. Called the “medicine chest” by the Father of Medicine himself, Hippocrates, black elderberries have been used in therapeutics since ancient times. The elder tree is even considered a magical element in cultures around the world, home to fairies and a respite from witches.
The elderberry’s history in medicine and folklore is rich. This deliciously dark purple berry grows on the branches of the mystical elder tree. Native to Europe, Asia, and North America, the elder tree is prized for its healing powers and thought to hold magical powers.
In Danish folklore, the elder tree is home to the dryad Hylde-Moer, the Elder-tree Mother, whose permission must be sought before any human could chop down her tree and use it for their own purposes: "Lady Ellhorn, give me some of thy wood and I will give thee some of mine when it grows in the forest.” 1
The Elder tree was thought to drive away evil spirits in Russia, and in England, the enigmatic tree was thought to never be struck by lightning. In countries around the world, the Elder Tree has been said to ward off evil influence and give protection from witches.1
The mysterious folklore that surrounds the elder tree is perhaps closely connected to the wondrous medicinal properties of the tree’s bark, flowers, leaves, and purple-black berries. The elder tree and elderberries have been used in traditional folk medicine dating back centuries.
The elder tree was described as “the medicine chest of the country people” by 17th century German physician Michael Ettmueller, the great Dutch physician Herman Boerhaave “never passed an Elder without raising his hat.”1
Perhaps the highest esteem came from the Father of Medicine himself, Greek physician Hippocrates, who called the elder tree his “medicine chest” in 400 BCE. Other classical healers also held the elder in high regard as one of nature's greatest medicinal plants.
Elderberries and other parts of the elder tree, including the flowers, leaves, and bark, have been used in folk medicine around the world for centuries. The plant’s many parts have been used to make ointments, tinctures, teas, wine, and the popular elderberry syrup. It is important to note that raw elderberries are toxic and must be cooked before consuming. The stems, leaves, and bark of the elder tree can also be toxic if ingested raw.
In North America, a different type of elderberry tree grows wild. Native Americans used the American black elderberries for food and purple dye, and used the bark, leaves, and flowers for their therapeutic benefits.
Elderberries and the elder plant are thought to have anti-inflammatory properties and reduce inflammation. The plant was used to ease symptoms of a number of ailments—from headaches to wounds to rheumatism—in traditional folk medicine.

Experts believe this theory dates back to 1848 in a book called Nanna (Soul-life of Plants), in which German professor Gustav Fechner suggested plants might be capable of feeling human-like emotions.
While we do not know for a fact that plants respond to affection, all things grow with love. So, go ahead and chit chat with your plants. They make great listeners.

Air-purifier: Many indoor objects give off pollutants called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may negatively impact health. Many plants are capable to fight or remove elements such as benzene, carbon monoxide or formaldehyde. Right now, many of us are unable to go on our regular summer vacations due to COVID-19, but short trips that are closer to home are a great option for you and your family to safely enjoy the summer.
Weekend getaways are part of a healthy lifestyle and a great way to reduce stress. According to University of Vienna, people who “get away from it all” experience fewer of the physical symptoms of stress, such as back aches and headaches, and these health benefits may last up to five weeks!
A great weekend getaway starts with being well-prepared; so don’t forget to pack your weekend getaway bag essentials.
1. The Right Bag. Having the right overnight bag for your trip is essential. A great weekend getaway bag should be lightweight and easy to carry. I always prefer a bag that is easy to organize so I can locate what I need right away.

I am always looking for ways to bring elements from the spa into my home! Who doesn’t want their home to be an oasis of relaxation and self-care? Now that we are spending more time at home, it’s even more important that we enjoy it and take time for ourselves. There are some easy things we can do to get that great “spa feeling” at home.
We want our home to feel like a spa so start by de-cluttering your space for a more relaxing vibe. Spray an aromatherapy mist or use a diffuser. Get your fluffiest towels and robe together and add in some relaxing music. This will give you that wonderful feeling of walking into a spa without leaving your home!
One of my favorite things when getting a spa treatment is those great gloves and/or booties they use with a rich moisturizer to keep your hand and feet soft. Wear them with your favorite heavy duty cream made for the body or hands and feet. Don’t forget the cuticles.
Many creams made for the hands and feet will contain essential oils like peppermint. This adds to the therapeutic benefit and smells incredible. Keep gloves or booties on for an hour while watching television, reading, or relaxing. For super soft hands and feet, wear gloves or booties to bed and wake up with baby soft skin.
Regular facials are one of the keys to great skin. I have become a pro with doing a quick at-home facial before shoots and any time I want my skin to glow. First, gently clean and exfoliate the skin. Next, every facial needs a nice steam to clear pores! This can be as simple as putting my face over a pot that has hot water steaming up.
After steaming, nothing feels better than a mask. Use a favorite brand or make a simple hydrating mask with aloe, avocado, and olive oil. This is a messy but easy mask, just combine 1 tsp fresh aloe, 1 tsp olive oil and ½ of a totally mashed avocado (it will stay on your face more easily). Apply and rinse after 10 minutes for glowing skin!
The final step in any facial is serums and moisturizer. Apply and your skin will look like you just left the spa!
No spa experience is complete without a wellness shot! Making your own at home is easy. I like a pineapple-lemon-Sambucol Black Elderberry shot. Easy Pose – This pose helps to reduce anxiety, stretch the hips, lengthen the spine and helps bring calm and serenity.
This pose is called, “Easy Pose” for a reason. It’s simply something we did all the time as kids. Simply sit on a comfortable mat with your legs crossed in front of you. Hands on knees. It helps open the hips and stretch the spine, but is the perfect pose for meditation and breath work.
Bridge Pose – The bridge pose reduces fatigue, anxiety, insomnia and headaches. Give the back and legs a stretch.
Bridge pose always makes me feel amazing! The key is not to overdo it. Stay at a level where you are comfortable. Practice will give you more flexibility over time!

Bow Pose: The bow pose is known to help with stress, anxiety and fatigue. Bow pose can be a bit more difficult. If you have any type of lower back issue or are just beginning, go at your own pace only where you feel comfortable.

We have noticed that there has been some inaccurate information reported regarding Elderberry and the potential effects of use with COVID-19. Simply put, there is no valid correlation between Elderberry and a “cytokine storm” (correctly known as Cytokine Release Syndrome, or CRS).
Summary:
Cytokines are a group of proteins made by the immune system that act as chemical messengers. There are different types of cytokines, including chemokines, interferons, interleukins, lymphokines and tumor necrosis factor. Essentially, they are cell signaling molecules that aid cell to cell communication in immune responses and stimulate the movement of cells towards sites of inflammation, infection and trauma. Cytokines are involved in many aspects of inflammation and immunity. 2,3
A cytokine storm (CRS) is an excessive immune response which may occur in late stage severe illness, sepsis, or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). By the time a cytokine storm may be experienced in a respiratory distress situation, a person would most likely be in a significantly compromised state and may already be in the ICU on lifesaving respiration equipment with care being managed by medical professionals. *4
Elderberry has a long history of use for immune support*. Both the flowers and berries have a long tradition of both culinary and folk medicinal uses going back thousands of years. As an herb it works in a variety of ways in the body. Herbs are thought in general to be supporters of physiology, rather than overt stimulants.*
